The short answer

Rent a dumpster when you have a long project that produces debris steadily over days or weeks and you have a driveway to put it on and people to fill it. Book junk removal when the junk already exists, is inside the house — especially a basement or upper floor — includes appliances or tires, or when there is nowhere good to park a container. Junk removal here is a flat tier: quarter truck $241, half truck $431, 3/4 truck $587, full truck $732, loading included.

Where the container goes matters in St. Louis

  • City alley blocks. In much of the City, refuse lives in alley dumpsters and the alley is shared. A roll-off in a narrow alley can block neighbors' garages and the City's own collection. On the street, parking is tight in Soulard, Tower Grove South and the CWE.
  • Brick flats. No driveway, often no front yard. The container has to go somewhere.
  • West County HOAs. Chesterfield, Ballwin and Wildwood subdivisions often restrict containers in driveways, or for how long.
  • Downtown lofts and high-rises. Usually no option for a container at all. Debris goes out through the freight elevator and dock.

If you cannot place a container easily, the decision is made.

Who does the loading

A dumpster gets delivered empty. Everything that goes in, you carry: up the basement stairs, down the flat's narrow stairway, across the yard, and over the container wall. For a St. Louis basement full of decades of storage, that is the whole job.

Think about what that means in hours. A half truck is about eight cubic yards: dozens of boxes, shelving, a couple of pieces of furniture. Carried up a steep City basement stair by two people, that is most of a weekend, and the heavy pieces still need a hand truck and a strong back. With junk removal, the crew carries from wherever items are, any floor, with no stairs fee, and loads the truck. You point; they lift.

What can't go in a dumpster

Dumpster companies restrict what goes in their containers, and Missouri's landfill rules drive many of the restrictions:

  • Major appliances — fridges, washers, water heaters — are banned from Missouri landfills (RSMo 260.250).
  • Tires must be cut, chipped or shredded before landfilling (RSMo 260.270).
  • Yard waste is banned from Missouri landfills.
  • Batteries and waste oil are banned too.
  • Electronics cannot go in the trash in Illinois.

Check your dumpster provider's list. With us, appliances, tires, yard waste, electronics and paint are all on the price list and routed correctly.

Cost: compare the whole job

Dumpster pricing varies by size, rental length and weight, and some charge extra for overweight loads. Our tiers include the labor, the hauling and the disposal.

LoadFlat price
1/4 truck (~4 cubic yards)$241
3/8 truck (~6 cubic yards)$338
1/2 truck (~8 cubic yards)$431
5/8 truck (~10 cubic yards)$513
3/4 truck (~12 cubic yards)$587
Full truck (~16 cubic yards)$732
Concrete / Masonry Debris (per 1/4 truck)$219

A basement cleanout with a half truck of boxes plus a fridge and a water heater is $431 + $164 + $131 = $726, carried up and gone the same day.

City residents have a third option for smaller jobs: self-haul to the North or South transfer station, weekdays 8:00 to 4:00, up to 12 loads a year, each about a half-ton pickup's worth. It works if you have the truck, the time and the helpers. No household hazardous waste is accepted there.

When a dumpster is the better tool

To be fair to the dumpster: for a multi-week gut rehab in Soulard or Old North, where demo produces debris every day and a crew is on site anyway, a container on the property can make sense. Same for a large roofing tear-off. Some projects use both: a dumpster for daily demo debris and a pickup for the appliances, furniture and anything the dumpster company will not take.

After a storm: container or crew?

The May 16, 2025 EF3 tornado damaged about 5,000 structures from Clayton and Richmond Heights through the Greater Ville, Fountain Park and O'Fallon. After a storm like that, both tools get used, and the choice follows the same logic. If a roofer is tearing off and replacing a roof over several days, a container sized for shingles fits. If the job is clearing damaged contents from a flooded basement, wet carpet and broken furniture, or a pile of branches in the yard, a crew is faster, because it is mostly carrying.

Storm debris also mixes materials that dumpster providers may restrict, like yard waste and appliances. On our list, yard waste is $88, roofing shingles are $48 per bundle and carpet removal is $71 per room, so a mixed storm load can be priced line by line or as a truck tier.

Three St. Louis scenarios

  • Tower Grove South flat, clearing a deceased relative's unit: furniture on the second floor, a basement of boxes, an alley out back. No driveway for a container, and every piece needs carrying. Junk removal: a full truck at $732 handles most two-bedroom units.
  • Chesterfield subdivision, garage and basement purge before listing the house: a container might fit the driveway, but HOA rules and listing photos both argue against it sitting there for a week. Junk removal: often a 3/4 truck at $587.
  • Soulard rowhouse, six-week gut rehab: demo every day, contractors on site, mostly plaster, lath and old framing. A dumpster for the daily demo, if you can place one legally, and a pickup for the old appliances and anything it will not accept.

The pattern is simple: if the junk exists now and needs carrying, a crew is the faster tool. If the junk is still being created on site over weeks, a container can make sense.

A quick decision guide

  • Junk already exists and is inside: junk removal.
  • Basement, attic or upper floor: junk removal.
  • Appliances, tires, electronics in the mix: junk removal, or both.
  • Narrow alley, no driveway, HOA restrictions: junk removal.
  • Weeks of ongoing demo with a crew on site: dumpster.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dumpster cheaper than junk removal in St. Louis?

It depends on the job. Compare the whole cost, including your time loading it and any items the dumpster cannot take. Our tiers include labor and disposal: half truck $431, full truck $732. For junk that is already inside the house, the labor is most of the job.

Can I put a fridge in a dumpster?

Major appliances are banned from Missouri landfills, so most dumpster providers restrict them. We take them for recycling; a standard fridge is $164. Refrigerant is recovered before scrapping.

Can I put a dumpster in my alley?

Alleys are shared and used for City refuse collection. Check with the City and your provider before placing one. A container that blocks the alley can block your neighbors and the trash trucks.

Do you load the truck?

Yes. Crews carry from anywhere in the home and load it. That includes basements and upper floors of brick flats. There is no stairs fee.

How fast can you come?

Same day when you book by 4 PM. You pick a two-hour arrival window. We are open 8am to midnight, seven days.
